EFFECT OF PROBLEM-SOLVING APPROACH TO TEACHING AND LEARNING OF MATHEMATICS ON STUDENTS WITH DIFFERENT ACHIEVEMENT ABILITIES IN KENYAN SECONDARY SCHOOLS [PDF] EMILY MALI MULWA ,DR.FRED ODINDO, DR.NEBERT KEVOGO
Despite mathematics being one of the core subjects in Kenya’s secondary school curriculum, many students have continued to perform dismally in the subject in Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) with the overall national mean score remaining below 30%. This study aimed at exploring whether there was any significant differences in mathematics’ mean achievement scores of the High Achievers (HAs) and Low Achievers (LAs) between the experimental and control groups. It was anchored on the social constructivism learning theory. The study employed a quasi-experimental non-equivalent control group post-test only design. The study population was 2162 form two learners from 26 schools. A purposive sampling technique was used to sample 14 schools that were at the same level in syllabus coverage and had two streams. Simple random sampling was employed to get the study sample of eight schools with 774 form two learners. Data collection instruments were Baseline Mathematics Achievement Test (BMAT) and Post Mathematics Achievement Test (PMAT).The study data was analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statistics where the means, standard deviations and independent samples t-test to test significant differences in means at an alpha value of 0.05 were used with the help of the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 29. In this study, findings indicated that there was a significant difference between the mean mathematics achievement scores of HAs and LAs taught through PSA as compared to those taught by conventional methods. This good performance was perhaps due to leaner active involvement, peer interactions, self-directed learning and increased confidence among the learners. This enhanced better understanding of the mathematics concepts which finally translated to improved performance. It was recommended that teachers of mathematics should be encouraged to use PSA so as to improve the performance of learners in mathematics especially LAs who are usually believed to lower the school performance mean scores.

THE EFFECTS OF ENVIRONMENTAL DISASTERS ON THE SOCIO-ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT OF INTERNALLY DISPLACED PERSONS IN MAGUINDANO DEL SUR: A QUALITATIVE STUDY [PDF] ALIZAIN A. TAHIR
This study attempted to understand the effects of environmental disasters on the socio-economic development of IDPs in Maguindanao del Sur in terms of housing conditions, health, security, livelihood, and education. This qualitative research envisaged analyzing community sectors' narratives, views, and opinions—farmers, business representatives, and barangay officials. In addition, the study sought in-depth knowledge from a Non-Government Organization (NGO), women, youth, and protracted IDPs who have thorough knowledge and experiences in dealing with the challenges of environmental disasters amid displacement situations.
Based on the findings, this study concluded that IDPs in Maguindanao del Sur experienced man-made and environmental disasters. These disasters affected the socio-economic development of IDPs, particularly in terms of housing conditions, health, security, livelihood, and education. Although they had coping mechanisms to adapt to the disasters' effects, they usually needed support to rebuild their lives and return to normalcy. To achieve this, preventive, responsive, and solutions-oriented support must be provided, including implementing an Early Warning System (EWS), strengthening faith-based resiliency, and fully implementing the existing disaster risk reduction (DRR) relevant laws, policies, and ordinances.

ANALYSIS OF SINGLE PHASE SEMI-CONVERTER CONTROLLED- DC MOTOR [PDF] Azuh C. O., Onah A. J., and Diyoke G. C.
In modern DC motor drives, controlled rectifiers are popularly employed to control the speed of DC motors. Controlled rectifier-fed dc motor drives are applied where frequent starting, braking, and reversing are needed, for example, in rolling mills, paper mills, printing presses, mine winders, and machine tools. They produce a high starting torque, and provide speed control over a wide range of speed. The speed of a dc motor can be controlled by (i) controlling the armature voltage ( ) - voltage control or (ii) controlling the field flux ( ) or field current ( ) - field control and (iii) torque demand-corresponding to an armature current, for a fixed field current, . In this paper, single-phase, full-wave, half-controlled rectifier was used to control the speed of a separately- excited dc motor. This rectifier produces variable dc output voltage from a fixed alternating current (ac) voltage. The output of this rectifier supplied the armature of a separately excited dc motor. Another single-phase, full-wave, half-controlled rectifier supplied the field winding of the motor. The armature voltage ( ) and field circuit voltage ( ) were varied by varying the delay or firing angles, and respectively, of the rectifiers in order to increase or decrease the speed or torque of the motor. The results obtained show that (i) the speed of the motor ( ) varies directly with the armature voltage ( ), (ii) the speed ( ) is inversely proportional to the field current ( ), (iii) the torque ( ) developed by the motor is directly proportional to the armature current ( ) and the field current ( ). At rated armature voltage (200 V), the no-load speed of the motor is 157 rad/s. At full load (9.55 N.m), the full-load speed is 110 rad/s.
Risk Management Strategies of Bank of Agriculture Borrowers in Imo State, Nigeria [PDF] Joel Onye, Ifeanyi Aloysius Maduike, Okechukwu Uzoma Iheme, Ngozichukwu Chiemela Martins
Abstract
This study was carried out because of the inability of farmers in the area to effectively manage the re-occurring risk associated with agricultural production as revealed by the high rate of default on loans to farmers by the Bank of Agriculture (BoA). The research was designed to examine the risk management strategies adopted by farmers who were loan beneficiaries of (BoA) located at No.1 Tetlow Road Owerri, Imo State Nigeria. Primary data used for the study were collected by distributing 61 questionnaires in total, 60 to farmers and 1 to Bank of Agriculture; No. 1 Tetlow Road Owerri, Imo State Nigeria. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, and an ordinary least square regression model (OLS) which was used to obtain the default rate on loans to the farmers. The average default rate estimated on loans to farmers was 49.5%. This shows that the risk management strategies employed by BoA in lending to farmers were poor. The result of this research further revealed that; the majority of the farmers (58.33%) were males. The average age and household size were 48 years and 4 persons respectively. The major risks faced by the farmers were related to either human resources, marketing, or production (H+M+P), which was about 31.67% for both male and female farmers. The poultry farm was more vulnerable to risk than every other enterprise of the farmers under investigation, with about 31.67% vulnerability to risk. The enterprise of the farmer with the least vulnerability to risk was water-leaf farms, which had about a 1.67% chance of risk occurrence. The result of the regression analysis indicates that: loan default (dependent variable) was negatively related to interest rate, Age, Experience, and Household size (Independent variables) at a 5% level of significance. The findings of this research suggest that BoA may consider these factors when evaluating loan applications to farmers to minimize the risk of loan default. However, it’s essential to consider other factors and nuances in the data to make informed lending decisions.

Optimization of additives for productions and strength characterization of eco-friendly sandcrete hollow block [PDF] Akintimiro A.T., Aiyewalehinmi E.O, and Oyedepo O. J.
This study investigated the optimization of additives to enhance the production and strength of eco-friendly sandcrete hollow blocks (SHBs) while meeting standard engineer-ing properties. The primary objective was to identify the most effective additive blend for improving SHBs' overall performance. A series of tests were conducted, including compres-sive strength tests, water absorption tests, fire resistance tests, and SEM-EDX analysis. Af-ter 28 days, the 5% PKSA (Palm Kernel Shell Ash) combination outperformed the control group with a compressive strength of 0.79 MPa, exceeding ASTM C90 requirements for concrete masonry units. As required by ASTM C140 for water absorption resistance, hy-brid samples with 5% PKSA and 5% PWSA (Periwinkle Shell Ash) showed low water ab-sorption values, ranging from 5.53 to 6.70 at 28 days. Additionally, the 5% PKSA 5% PWSA hybrid sample demonstrated outstanding fire resistance, enduring temperatures from 218°C to 1850°C at 28 days, conforming to ASTM E119 standards for fire endurance tests. SEM-EDX analysis of the 5% PKSA 5% PWSA sample revealed significant concen-trations of Silicon (Si) at 52.85% and Calcium (Ca) at 25.34%, contributing to its structural strength. Additional elements found match ASTM requirements for concrete materials and point to possible qualities including lightweight, corrosion resistance, and thermal stability. In summary, the hybrid blend of 5% PKSA and 5% PWSA proves to be the most effective sample for SHB modification, satisfying important engineering requirements and provid-ing encouraging opportunities for sustainable building materials.
Réforme du système de retraite en RDC: travailler jusqu’à mourir et laisser place aux jeunes pour de bon [PDF] Dieudonné UPIRA SUNGUMA KAGIMBI
The pension system allows each retiree to receive a pension likely to provide them with an honourable income, for their subsistence minimum. And retirement not only contributes to rejuvenating public administration but also to making it professional. In the DRC, since 2015, the National Social Security Fund Public Agents of the State (NSSFPAS) was created. Nevertheless, it emerges from the analyses based on the systemic method, according to the Ira Shankansky diagram, that from the partial taking into account of the contingency factors , the retirement systèm not only leads irreversibly to non-rejuvenation and to the non-professionalization of the Public Administration , but also makes retirees homeless. This study highlights the mixed results of partial consideration of contingency factors on the reform of the retirement system.

DECONSTRUCTION DE LA DEFINITION DE L’ENFANT EN PHILOSOPHIE [PDF] Muhindo Amini Thierry
